What the record shows

The City defines a short-term rental as temporary accommodation in all or part of a dwelling, provided for 30 consecutive days or less in exchange for payment or service. The licence has been required since 1 December 2023. The page says the operator must own and live at a principal residence in Guelph; the rental may be at that residence or at an additional residence, and in most cases one other legally established unit on the same property may be rented too, so up to two short-term rentals may be registered under one name at one address.

An application includes a criminal records and judicial matters check, a guest information package and a fire plan, and each rental may be inspected by building, fire, by-law or zoning staff. Fees are set in the City's User Fee Bylaw, and the fine for operating without a licence is $615. Bed and breakfasts are licensed under a different category. The by-law is the public rule; whether a particular home holds a licence is a separate question.
