What the record shows

The Town's Trees & Natural Areas page says trees on private property are the responsibility of the property owner, and that the Town is reviewing current policies and exploring potential urban forestry by-laws, with no decisions made yet. The Town maintains the trees on its road allowances, in its parks and along its trails.

The County of Simcoe's Forest Conservation By-law 6894 applies to woodlands within the County on a property of one hectare (2.47 acres) or more, and requires a County permit to harvest, injure or destroy trees in them unless an exemption applies, such as clearing within 25 metres of a building that has a building permit. The County says the by-law does not regulate properties under one hectare. A rule summary says what the by-laws cover; it doesn't say who owns a given tree or whether a lot holds woodland.
