What the record shows

The Town's Trees and Forestry page says a tree must stand entirely on the owner's property before it is removed, that street trees belong to the Town and can't be removed by residents, and that a property of more than 0.5 hectares or inside the Regional Greenlands System falls under Halton Region's rules on tree removal. The page names no Town permit for a tree on a private lot.

Halton Region's Tree By-law 121-05, in effect since 1 January 2006, applies to properties with all or part of a woodland over 0.5 hectares, or partly or wholly in the Regional Greenlands, now called the Natural Heritage System. An owner may harvest up to 24 cubic metres of wood a year for their own use following Good Forestry Practices; more than that, or harvesting outside normal farm practices or without an approved Forest Management Plan, needs a permit. The Region says the by-law doesn't apply to dead or diseased trees, normal farm operations or removals already approved through another process. A rule summary says what the by-laws cover; it doesn't say whether a treed area counts as woodland, which the Region's staff determine.
