Home records, explained › The home and the lot

Is the home designated, listed or in a heritage district?

Under the Ontario Heritage Act a municipality keeps a register of properties it has designated (Part IV), the heritage conservation districts it has made (Part V), and properties it has listed as having heritage value without designating them. Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton and Guelph publish their registers as open data.

Report check: Heritage. Entry reviewed 20 Oct 2026; each source below shows its own data date.

What the record is

Designation means alterations to the heritage attributes and demolition need council's consent. A district applies similar control to every property inside its boundary. A listed property has no such control, but the owner must give the City 60 days' notice before demolition, and the City may then designate it.

The report line says whether the address is designated, listed, inside a district, or none of these, and names the district or by-law when there is one. The Ontario Heritage Trust keeps the provincial register.

Where it runs
