The rule in Innisfil

Innisfil by-law 058-25: the Town's approval is needed to cut trees on land under site plan control, including waterfront homes, and a community planning permit for tree removal on residential lots fronting Lake Simcoe or in Alcona; woodlands on a property of one hectare or more need a County of Simcoe permit under its Forest Conservation By-law 6894.

What the record shows

The Town's trees page says that, depending on a property's location and land use, trees may not be cut without approval from the Town or other authorities, and that tree cutting is prohibited without the Town's prior approval on land subject to site plan control, which includes waterfront homes. On residential properties fronting Lake Simcoe or in Alcona, the Community Planning Permit System, under By-law 058-25 adopted in June 2025, requires a permit for site alterations, including vegetation and tree removal. The page also points to the Lake Simcoe Region and Nottawasaga Valley conservation authorities, whose permits may apply.

The County of Simcoe's Forest Conservation By-law 6894, enacted in April 2021, applies to woodlands on a property of one hectare (2.47 acres) or more: harvesting, injuring or destroying trees there needs a County permit unless the by-law exempts the work, as it does for some clearing for a building that has a building permit. The County says the by-law doesn't regulate properties under a hectare, or stop owners cutting wood for their own use while the forest remains a woodland. A rule summary says which records apply; it doesn't say who owns a given tree or whether a lot is a woodland.
